“Make America Great Again” alludes to a time when we as a nation were superb. It’s an era that no one can pin down under scrutiny since whichever time was great for some, was invariably horrendous for others. MAGA may be catchy, but it ignores a complex reality.

From our nation’s earliest days, for every substantial winner, there have always been countless losers. As the European colonists made their push across what became our lower 48 states, Native Americans were virtually exterminated. Conquering nations always leave trails of multi-generational suffering.

The same could be said for the hundreds of thousands of blacks brought here like livestock to provide generations of free labor to wealthy settlers. Their denigration and abuse continues to this day.

Unfortunately, there has never been an era in which all of America thrived. However, our nation has been rightfully celebrated for its continued struggle to provide liberty, justice and opportunity for all.

When any American makes personal sacrifices for the welfare of others we grow. Every time citizens forgo what they want, so that others can get what they need, our country evolves. Each time someone stands with a dry mouth and sweaty palms to speak truth to power about inequality and someone else’s suffering, we’re witnessing elements of greatness.

And if we courageously leave the security of long held political allegiances to vote for a more compassionate and sustainable future for our children and those of our distant neighbors, we nourish greatness.
